Sound

For the purposes of demonstration, I will use the EMBED tag. Perhaps at a later time, I will expand this sound section to include other tags related to sound (in fact, I know I will.)

<EMBED SRC="filename.ext" width=x height=x autostart=x hidden=x loop=x volume=x>

The filename is followed by an extension that is indicative of the sound file format being used. .wav for wave files and .mid for MIDI files are two common sound file extensions and you will see others.

Typical values for the width and height attributes are width=145 width=60.

The autostart attribute determines how the file will be started. autostart=true causes the file to begin automatically. autostart=false requires the file to be started using the sound control box start button. Leaving the autotart attribute out is the same as autostart=false.

The hidden attribute controls the ability of the user to see the sound control box. hidden=true causes the sound control box to be hidden from view while hidden=false causes it to be visible. Leaving the hidden attribute out is the same as hidden=false.

The loop attribute determines what happens when the end of the sound file is reached. loop=true causes the file to repeat while loop=false causes the file to play once and stop. Leaving this attribute out is the same as loop=false.

The volume attribute has a range of volume=1 to volume=100. The default is 50. Leaving this attribute out sets it automatically to the default value.

One important thing to remember about using sound on Web pages is that most people do not appreciate sound that starts automatically. Most people prefer to control as much as they possibly can on a Web page. Sound that cannot be controlled usually causes a site user to turn their sound off or leave the site.
