Sequential Numbers in documents

Can someone come up with a simple way to use a formula to put a sequential number in each new document made from the same form when it is created? I tried to use the @DocNumber function but I cannot seem to get this to work correctly in a computed field. Surely this is something so common there has to be a standard way of doing it.

There are several different ways to do it. One is using Profile documents. The other is using a lookup from the hidden view in the database. If you want more details mail me on asm001@yahoo.com
