java help needed
Please can somebody point me in the direction of a decent beginners guide to java on the web. I have searched for hours but all I can find are ones that don't explain the basics. Thank You.

Let me know if you find one. I know exactly how you feel. The reason this site exists is because I found it difficult to get basic answers to Java questions anywhere except for the classroom when I was first exposed to Java.
You have made me aware that I need to consider developing a basic level tutorial that includes everything I found difficult to find but is necessary for working with java.
You will find answers to some of your basic level questions at the Past Q & A link on the front page of Java Q & A. Also, feel free to bring your specific questions here anytime. Your questions may not be answered immediately, but they probably won't be answered immediately anywhere else either. It takes a little bit of time for someone who can (and will) answer a particular question.
Good luck. I hope someone knows of a good on-line tutorial.

try going to yahoo and searching for "java" ... then click the first category match it has ... then you should get a list of subcategories and sites ... click the subcategory "Tutorials" ... you may find what you're looking for in that way

Go to "java.sun.com/tutorial", they have a whole book which you can read on line or download(16MB), also they just have the new JDK 1.2 in Beta. Nice to meet you guys. I started learning Java last month(coming from Cpp). Stefan
