My Friend

My Friend

My Friend, who once toppled over boulders and cobbles,
You gathered to your crest,
And took from him so much of life,
That mattered to him, best.

He moved on, to climb upon,
New mountains to surmount,
Then tried and tried, in private, cried,
Your ravage to discount.

You kept him by your bay, you thought,
In making him so ill.
But, on and on, each day he fought,
Determined in his will...

To overcome you, beat you, shun you,
Never to give in.
Though, oh so hard, you plied your trade,
He'd never let you win.

So, come what may, as I write this day,
You tethered him to stone,
Think not that you bested him,
In that, you are alone.
