Jumping Fences
by Paul Chamberlain
11-25-97

As some metals lack bending,
Lost to the forge in the rending,
Although, by the sale, they have Time.

Such is the matter of relations, like ladders,
That patchwork the fields that we find.

To lay on their side, where decisions may ride,
To leap them, or leave them as found,
We sit on them pondering, or follow them, wandering,
These fences, to which we are bound.

Though some may, chance take,
Jump and foresake,
Their soil, for love of their dreams,

Others, in error,
May land, to their terror,
The mistake of their life, as it seems.
