Alone
by Robert Hart
When I go to sleep at night,
I think of when I shall see God's light.
I think of what I shall leave behind,
And the friends who shall over my grave pine.
But what is this that invades my dreams,
O my God! Reality it seems.
The terrible truth now revealed to me,
My friends are few and my attainments not three.
So who will come to the grave to see me?
My mother, my father, if they still be.
Else I shall be as alone in death,
As I was when my body held breath.
